CEBU, Philippines (February 20, 2014) – On 24 February 2014, Mövenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu was awarded the international Green Globe Certification (GGC) by the organizations’ CEO, Mr. Guido Bauer. The hotel also received Green Globe’s Sustainability Leadership Award for pioneering this international standard in Cebu and The Philippines.
Mr. Guido Bauer commented on the hotel’s newest achievement “Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu made the difference between talking about sustainability and having sustainability certified by an independent third party against an international standard. The hotel has scored in the top 15% of all green globe certified hotels worldwide. With the Movenpick Mactan being certified the Philippines has joined 93 other countries which have green globe certified hotels and businesses. The certificate is a milestone for the hotel and a reaffirmation of the hotel’s commitment to sustainability.”
Sustainability is deeply rooted in the Movenpick Hotel Groups worldwide.
The hotel itself was redesigned to minimise energy consumption thru the use of natural ventilation and day lighting elements. The entire hotel is oriented to minimise heat absorption while maximising the amount of daylight received, both for lighting purposes and to take full advantage of Cebu’s warm and breezy tropical atmosphere.
Within the building itself, LED bulbs have been fitted throughout the hotel, resulting in substantial cost and energy savings. Energy usage in the guest rooms is further reduced by regulating air-conditioning room temperatures to 24 degrees Celsius and implementing keycard sensors to turn off electricity as soon as the guest leaves the room. Guests also play a role. They can decide the frequency of towel changes in their bathrooms.
The real savings comes from the hotel’s landscaped garden where a rainwater harvesting system is installed to collect water for the hotel’s swimming pool. Grey water is also used throughout the hotel’s bathroom facilities to reduce potable water consumption. As a final touch, the hotel keeps the guests informed of ways to conserve water and energy thru the use of environmental hangers in each guestroom.
As part of the corporate social responsibility program, hotel management encourages employee participation in local community initiatives such as beach clean-ups and involvement in local children support programs.
Green Globe is the premier worldwide sustainability certification for the travel and tourism industry. The certification is in full compliance with ISO standards meaning independent third party auditing of the 42 criteria and 337 indicators . The Green Globe Standard is considered the world-wide standard for the hospitality industry.
